Fitzpatrick Castle stands on Killiney Hill above Dublin Bay, about 20 minutes’ drive from the city. Rooms are classic, and the communal areas are beautifully decorated.

The leisure centre has a 20-metre pool, whirlpool spa, Scandinavian sauna, steam room and gym (swim caps are required in the pool). PJ’s is the fine-dining room and there’s also a restaurant in the old dungeon. Dalkey and the DART are close by.
